WOW! It was truly inspirational! After spending five days with fellow practitioners and trainers, I came away so inspired. As an instructor and practitioner, I always say,"when you teach you learn!"
It was a honor to be among so many great speakers and amazing women. A beautiful tapestry of work and friendship was continuously woven through our 84 attendees over the two days. As I watched new friendships being born and listened to their exchange of commonalities, approaches and ultimately questions to each other regarding procedures. The absence of a personal agenda and focus on sharing ones' experience and knowledge helped to create the magical atmosphere. Given this, the focus remained on education and that was our goal. I was in awe. I am deeply appreciative of the graciousness of all of our attendees and the way in which my presentations were received. I also am thankful for the insightful comments.
A very special thank you and gratitude to Jeanne Lusby and her staff for putting together a wonderful conference that allowed us to create a community of sharing and learning which helps us all to grow and make positive advances in the field of permanent cosmetics. I am looking forward to the next one; until then stay beautiful, grow and continue to be inspired!

We are ALL in this together - Breast Cancer does not discriminate
We must continue to be brave, courage and support all women who are faced with breast cancer.
As an instructor that specializes in teaching 3-dimensional areola tattooing following a mastectomy, I have had the privilege of working with many brave women that have been faced with the same difficult choice made recently by Angelina Jolie. I commend her for sharing her plight with the world. I believe her bravery and generosity will reach far and wide in giving many woman the courage to choose the same.
So often, women are not given the opportunity to choose a prophylactic mastectomy. The presence of a cancer made this choice for them. Although, it may be understood that this is a life-saving surgery, this knowledge does not make it any less traumatic for a woman to be faced with losing her breasts. Electing this surgery is yet, another story.
Angelina's sharing this can impact women in several ways. First, it reminds us that cancer does not discriminate. Money and fame do not make you any less exempt. Also, young women facing cancer can relate to Jolie. She is a busy mom, a career woman and wife and admittedly a magnificent representation of feminine beauty, even if you are not a fan. Yet, she appears to feel no less feminine as she recently strutted the red carpet.
The rich and famous celebrities have proven to be as vulnerable as ever other woman have provided us with great role models who have chosen various modalities of breast cancer treatment. Christina Applegate barely missed a beat, rising like a phoenix following a bilateral mastectomy. We also have Suzanne Sommers who inspired many by taking the naturopathic route and appears to be in robust health. We thank them all for sharing.
In reality, we, as women are all in this together. Breast cancer appears to be at epidemic proportions. Having the privilege of teaching in cancer institutes such as Memorial Sloan Kettering and Stephanie Spielman Cancer Center, countless more and in my own practice, I have met many breast cancer survivors that have become my heroes and role models. I am in awe at the bravery and healthy attitudes of these women. There is much to be said about the camaraderie and the support that these women extend to one another and I am grateful to be invited to join hands with them and womankind until we find the cure.

It's that time of year again - to show off your skin (whether you want to or not).
My commitment to writing this blog to remind you, each and every one of you how important you are and share my personal favorite lessons learned.

If we do not take care of ourselves, our cups feel empty. No one, not even our loving significant others or our children will come to us and say "you look a bit tired, you seem to do everything for everyone so I made you an appointment for your eyebrows to be touched up". Its not happening! You will be considered fortunate if your significant other scheduled you a manicure. We must go off and fill our own cups and ultimately, I always find I have more to give when I have taken care of myself.

Winter doldrums and complacency often set in following the holiday season. We shopped for family and friends, cooked and baked with great purpose and then comes the lull. The perfect way to avoid the lull is to put the focus back on YOU!!!

Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention
I took part in The Philadelphia Tattoo Arts Convention last weekend, since my permanent makeup classes generally consist of nurses, physician assistants, aestheticians and tattoo artists. As I walked up and down the aisles of this hugely, overwhelming tattoo show I wondered how anyone could possibly select an artist from such an enormously talented group.
Would it be according to how the artist looks, perhaps a hot looking guy or girl, possibly even how extreme they appear (tattoos on their faces or extreme piercings) or is it how the booth itself is designed with signage or maybe the artist's portfolio that convinces the anxious consumer to select their artist?
As I perused the hundreds of booths, I decided I would make my pretend selection from their portfolios, so I went through several hundred of those until I happened upon an artist that completely blew me away!So much that I purchased one of his prints since I wasn't actually seeking the permanence of a tattoo. A few isles over and I purchased another print. The talent was endless and it would have been a very difficult decision if I really had to select. Then, I realized, this is why people have more than one tattoo!
This brought me to another fascinating question. What makes one person select a religious symbol and the next person a demonic creature to proudly display? Then, there are some that choose a beautiful ethnic expression such as Celtic design or a flag that they don with honor. It is so interesting to see these various forms of self-expression and even more interesting to hear why people make their selection. We heard so many great stories that varied from the deepest of meaning (even tattooed portraits of loved ones) to comedic display.
There are even tattoo artists that specialize in Cover-Ups, when one wishes to cover up an old tattoo, a bad tattoo or a tattooed name that no longer applies to one's life. Dan Craft, of DNA tattoo in Williamstown, is known for his tattoo artistry as well as this Cover-Up specialization.
It was a great thrill to get to meet Philadelphia Eddie and I purchased all 5 volumes of his book, My Vida Loca. He stressed to me that I need to read them in order so that I can appreciate the flow of his entire life in tattooing and I can't wait to read about his early days and how his techniques eventually morphed and evolved.
Our booth was non-stop with both inquiries and spectators while I was performing a procedure. Lots of younger girls wanting permanent eyeliner and women wanting their eyebrows tattooed. One thing for sure, tattooing, in just about every form has become quite mainstream. There were mothers and daughters that stopped by to tell us they were there to get identical tattoos to symbolize their bond to each other.
Our funniest moment was when a young guy with several tattoos was watching me do an eyebrow procedure and said he had to turn away because he felt faint. In unison, along with his girlfriend, we all said, "Seriously" and laughed out loud!
The lines to get into the show appeared to be endless and the crowds in each isle at times were barely passable but I have never heard so much Philadelphia Brotherly Love. I will always remember this weekend for hearing, Excuse Me and Sorry, more times than I have ever heard in any crowd. It was the friendliest crowd and I was proud to be a part of this exhibition and can't wait until next year to do it, again!!!

New Year... New You!
The Mayans were wrong so we are forced to make those New Year resolutions, once again. However, this year, lets try something new. Let begin our beauty regiment from the inside.
The New Year is a good time to reflect as well as project. What part of your persona that you projected in 2012 do you wish to improve in 2013? It may be patience, it may be a general attitude you have at work, it may be kindness you wish to show, generosity, etc. Close your eyes and picture this person you want to project to the world. Picture the beauty in this New You and now stop and FEEL this beauty, really FEEL it.
How will this beautiful you greet people, how will you walk and carry yourself, how will you handle problems and issues? Now simply translate this feeling into words in a sentence or two. For instance, am kind, patient and generous with my time and this inner beauty is felt by everyone I encounter. Another example, am accepting to people walking their chosen path and this acceptance is reflected through my eyes. One more example, Iam confident in the kind person that I am and I carry myself with great pride. Now, each and every morning and even throughout the day, recite this affirmation and saying it into a mirror is best. Getting beauty right from the inside is where beauty truly begins.
Outer beauty is the easy part. But, first, we have to be honest with ourselves in how much time and work we are willing to put into this outer beauty idea. Lets start with our skin. Me, I KNOW I am lazy. I am not the woman that follows 5 steps to washing her face morning and evening that may or may not include some anti-aging products. This could even mean more steps! I can't (refuse) to it!!! I found a 2-Step cleansing and anti-aging process that works for me. I am big on retinols (love Riffissa) and sunscreens and this combo really does make things quite simple. Many over-the-counter products now contain retinols and are a great place to begin using them and eventually, you can graduate to a prescriptive strength. As we mature, we lose the fat in our skin and retinols are the only things that actually thicken skin. They also reduce brown spots and even out the overall tone of one's complexion.
Many women will say NO to retinols because of a bad reaction or experience they had with Retin-A, but that is prescriptive strength and most likely they were told to use it every day. This will create redness and flaking and sometimes irritation in most women but beginning with a much less strong retinol will not create these discomforts and reactions. Vitamin C is also very popular. Find the anti-aging product that works for you but remember, spending more money on the cream doesn't necessarily make it any better. Often, you are paying for marketing and packaging. Keep it simple and inexpensive and if you don't see a marked change within 15 to 30 days, send it back to the company. They always want feedback and most often are very generous with giving you a refund.
